Crossword puzzle

Crossword puzzle

There will be few children who haven't done a crossword puzzle. Crossword puzzles are common today and sre found in most magazines, weeklies children's publications ad newspapers. Most often we see this puzzle as a game that increases our mental abilities. it was in 1913 that a reporter Arthur Wynne, an Englishman made the first crossword puzzle. Arthur Wynne was born on June 22, 1871 in Liverpool, England. He was working on the New York World when the editor asked him to produce a new game for the Sunday edition of the paper.

The first thought that went through Arthur Wynne was a memory of the game Magical Squares that he had played as a boy. That was a game in which letters were arranged in a box and could form the same word vertically as well as horizontally. He decided to build upon that game. He decided to increase the number of boxes and provide clues for words instead of specific letters.

The crossword puzzle that was made as a result was published in the Sunday edition of the New York World on december 21st 1913. The first crossword puzzle had certain basic differences from the one that is seen today. The boxxes for the letters were  not in a square shape, but in a diamond shape. Like wise, there weren't any black/coverd squares in the first crossword puzzle. since his clues were quite easy, Wynne's crossword puzzle was well recieved by children and adults alike. As the years passed, the crossword puzzle grew in popularity. In 10 years., this mental exercise spread to other American newspapers too. By 1930, a crossword puzzle was printed in the London times of Britain and it began to be famous in the other countries too. Today the crossword puzzle is an integral part of any children's publication. Apart from newspapers, today crossword puzzels are common on the Internet and in the computer.
